Contact Beyond Contact
Facilitators Training Course

Unity Space is very excited to announce the First Facilitators Training Course focusing specifically on the true human connections and constructive relationships we build in our life. In dance education and practice, we usually focus in the body and mind inter-relationship.

Contact Beyond Contact FTC furthermore focuses on the heart and spirit inter-relationship and endeavors to create facilitators and teachers who will lead the dance education in the 21st Century.

Contact Beyond Contact (CBC), is a dance and healing practice originally created by Vangelis Legakis, the founder and artistic director of Unity Space - an Arts and Healing Organisation based in Hong Kong. CBC is an accumulation of Vangelis’ wealth of experience and research into different movement practices and healing modalities.

Contact Beyond Contact (CBC) is a practice that integrates Authentic Movement (AM), Contact Improvisation (CI) and Passing Through (PT) with other profound practices such as qigong, yoga, healing modalities, principles of behaviourism and energy work, mindfulness, leadership skills, proprioceptive and exteroceptive senses, somatics and the philosophies of Buddhism and Taoism. All of these practices are woven together to create a holistic integration of the Body, Mind, Heart and Spirit.

CBC creates a safe space for each individual, one where you are able to express, trust and transform by honouring your personal boundaries and the boundaries of others. The practice focuses on all our bodies, what in Greek is called Soma - the integration of Body, Mind, Heart and Spirit. It is important to acquire an understanding of all the bodies to be capable of interpreting intentions, perceptions and insights, and acting through wisdom and love.

This practice will allow you to genuinely, energetically connect with yourself, an-other, the space you are working in and with nature; the world beyond the means of physical contact. Contact already starts from the space in between two bodies, before the physical skin to skin contact; the eyes need to come into contact with what they witness, the ears need to come into contact with the vibrations of sounds within and around us. We are living in an interactive space of frequencies that create energy waves. Energy waves entangled together create a field, and the field is interconnected with all material and immaterial aspects of our internal and external worlds.

CBC is a practice that develops and cultivates fine-tuned and genuine communication from within to connect with the world. Through the art forms of dance and energy work, we are given the tools to enhance and explore the metaphysical aspects of our existence.

In a CBC session you can expect to work on a few of the practices and concepts of experiential anatomy, somatics & energetics, breathing and energy work, meditation and mindfulness as well as on body language and communication skills of leading-following, push-pull, passing through; working in solos, partners and groups.

Who are CBC sessions for?

CBC sessions are open to all - whether you are an experienced dance practitioner/ healer or a complete beginner to dance, holistic and spiritual practices - CBC welcomes you to experience and practice. The sessions offer you a non-judgmental space to discover and deepen your relationship within yourself, with others and the world around you. The skills and tools are all inclusive and take each individual into account, making it a practice available for all bodies and people of varying professional, cultural and religious backgrounds.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to train facilitators in CBC dance and healing practice. that can spread the value and importance of authentic human connection; for the individual, in relationships and in community.

Our Vision:

Our vision is to establish conscious dance practice as an all-inclusive heart-based practice for genuine connection, healing and human evolution.

Dance is a social and integrative practice that connects people. We are passionate about dance and endorse dance as an accessible healing practice for all. We believe that everybody can dance and that everybody has the capability to facilitate a dance and healing session. Contact Beyond Contact | Facilitators Training Course (CBC| FTC) is a course through which you will become a capable facilitator to genuinely hold space for others and create safe environments of transformation and healing.

CBC|FTC is a 7 day (50 hour) course, designed to train new facilitators to spread Contact Beyond Contact dance and healing practice in their communities; to schools, universities, community centres, studios, festivals and to the world. The aim of this course is to create facilitators that can spread the value and importance of authentic human connection; for the individual, in relationships and in the community.

Interdisciplinary Integrative Dance Education is very important to us. In order to honour high standards of learning and embodied practice, this training course is divided into four levels: physical body (Body), psychological body (Mind), emotional body (Heart) and spiritual body (Spirit). Each level focuses on 2 out of the 8 basic behaviours, for a fully embodied integration.

FTC Level 1 | Foundations
Main focus is on the Body and the behaviours of Orientation and Exploration

FTC Level 2 | Intermediate
Main focus is on the Mind and the behaviours of Rejection and Incorporation

FTC Level 3 | Advanced
Main focus is on the Heart and the behaviours of Destruction and Protection

TTC Level 4 | Teacher Training Course
Main focus is on the Spirit and the behaviours of Deprivation and Reproduction

After being certified for the Foundations Level 1 you will be able to continue and further deepen your studies to Intermediate Level 2, Advanced Level 3, and eventually to Level 4, where you will be accredited a Teachers Training Course.

What is the Facilitators Training Course (FTC) and how is it different from a Teachers Training Course (TTC)?

The main difference lies in the words ‘teacher’ and 'facilitator’. A teacher is someone with the knowledge and expertise, whereas a facilitator is still in the process of learning, and from that place, is offering their support and current knowledge to the group.

With the Facilitators Training Course (FTC), you will gain vital understanding and experience on how to facilitate a workshop, a class or an open dance space, integrating energy work and healing. To facilitate such an event is not about teaching the participants certain skills, but rather about creating the right and safe environment to hold and guide the participants in their journey. The aim of a facilitator is to allow the participants to discover different aspects of their expressivity through dance, creating a space of transformation and healing. Only at level 4 of the CBC|FTC course will you be experienced enough to teach all of the skills and practices in depth for the Level 1.

Upon the completion of CBC | FTC Level 3 (175HRS), you are eligible to take CBC | Teachers Training Course (75Hrs), which will certify you with a 250hr Teacher Training.
Break down: Level 1 (50 Hrs), Level 2 (50 Hrs), Level 3 (70 Hrs), Level 4 (80 Hrs).

Do I need to have dance practice or training before I enroll in FTC?

No, it is not necessary to have dance training nor practice, however we do advise that you gain some experience in other embodied and movement practices. This can be yoga, martial arts, qigong, tai qi, bodywork, healing therapies, sports and any other activities that allow you to develop a certain level of body awareness.

Will I receive a certificate after FTC and if yes, will I be able to facilitate a session right after the course finishes?

Yes, you will receive a certificate accredited by Unity Space and will be able to facilitate a session right after the completion of your course. The length of time it takes for you to begin facilitating will depend on your integration of the practices. It is up to you to keep the knowledge fresh and embodied within yourself. It must be noted that education is very important to us, therefore we will only certify people that we feel are ready to facilitate a CBC event.

Where will I be able to facilitate a session after completing the FTC course?

You will be able to facilitate in different venues such as dance and yoga studios, community and arts centers and any other spaces that accommodate dance practice.

Will I be able to teach other people what I have learnt in the FTC course?

From this course, although it is a Facilitators Training Course, there are foundational skills that you will learn which you will be able to transmit to other people. The teacher who runs the course will prepare you well enough to embody the knowledge and skills from the course before graduating.

Where will I be able to stay and how much will it cost?

We do not include the accommodation unless it is specified in the course. Check on the website in advance or contact us for more information.

How do I get to the studio/accommodation from the airport and how much should it cost?

Once you have contacted us personally, we will guide you in detail.

Do I need to prepare or purchase my own food during the entire course?

You will need to cover your own meals, however the organization will cover a healthy final dinner upon completion of the course. Where it is specified, the meals will be included together with the accommodation, depending on the venue we host the course.

"Words can barely describe how transformative, healing, supportive, challenging and wonderful this training was for me. Due to the safe space, which was held at all time, I was able to open up, step out of my comfort zone, release old patterns and shatter belief systems. I not only experienced a beautiful sense of unity, support, friends and family, but also a life long change deep within me.
This training changed my life on a scale I cannot grasp yet. It is only the beginning!"
- Daniela. S (CBC|FTC LV1)-

“I participated in Levels 1 and 2 of the CBC FTC and I am eternally grateful for the gifts they have given me. I have a background and interest in many movement and healing modalities such as yoga, qigong, thai massage etc, and this course so beautiful connects them all. Vangelis provides a safe space, that really allows all of the participants to drop into themselves and discover their unique role and calling. Both courses provided me with many new skills and practices, making me feel confident in my ability to facilitate and hold a CBC session. For me, Contact Beyond Contact represents the power of community and the strength that comes from authentic human connection. I look forward to spreading CBC to the world.”
- Kiana. N (CBC|FTC LV1&2)-

"What I love about this practice is this sense that I can slow time or even stop it - that I am alive through every cell of my body, fully embodied, connected to people and the environment.
It is the opportunity to practice the kind of listening, communication, creative confidence, playfulness, intentionality, adaptability, trust, focus, and acceptance I aim to bring in to my daily life.
As part of the facilitator's course, we hold sessions for the general public, and it has been inspiring and spine-chilling to see people walk in commenting about how they don't think they can dance or how they feel fear about contact dance, and end the session with joyful enthusiasm about the next session. it's been powerful to see experienced dancers in a number of modalities share about the heightened level of awareness, connection, and comfortable intimacy they experienced.
I loved learning, embodying, exploring the immense breadth and depth of modalities and practices that Van has unified together through Contact Beyond Contact.
I gained so much as a facilitator from Van's way of facilitating and holding space for whole rooms of diverse people - to discuss what we can be observing and making choices around, to explore nuances and possibilities, and to receive specific and direct feedback on ways I can personally keep improving.
In just the first day of the training, I felt that I had already changed in how I move and I how I relate to others - and by the end of two weeks for levels 1 and 2, I felt exponentially more able to dance, create, and communicate. I highly recommend this training for people with curious mind, love breadth and depth, keen to learn from everything, and keen to move through challenges with mind body heart and spirit.
- Angela.O (CBC|FTC LV1&2)-
