Julyen Hamilton

3 Days in Space

[ABOUT THE CLASS]

The 3 day Intensive workshop will be an introduction to the Space Issue, a major element in improvised composition for dancers, actors and musicians.

JULYEN HAMILTON

BIO:

Julyen Hamilton’s teaching investigates deeply the creative act and the technique needed to accompany and facilitate it. His vision of technique is one which observes how things are made, how they function and how knowledge, experience and intuition can be used to create the work we each need to make.
It naturally enters the worlds of physiology, philosophy, culture, imagination and the future. THIS workshop considers and practices the essential nature of the SPACE in which choreography and dance can be made and performed. It penetrates the themes of radial and Cartesian space and how they affect the moving body and the theatrical space where audience and performer meet.
In recent years the compositional elements of major concern have been time space, dramaturgy, music and the voice;  they stem from his experience as a dancer who creates and organises material instantly before the public. The basic work is the handling of the body and the ‘speaking’ from it in space, motion and time. Its co-ordination and its relationship to the material it creates  –  and then to the sharing of it in performance.
His ability to distil and convey essential principles allows dancers from a wide range of backgrounds to engage in his methodology.

JULYEN will teach a master workshop during 21-23 December 2020.

Since 2015, he has been collaborating with Danae Dimitriadi. Together they created their first work “UNCIA” which toured internationally and also received the first and two additional awards at RIDCC and the second award and the International Choreographic Competition in Hannover. Later on, they created “ATMA”, which has toured in Europe and Asia and “Free At Last”, a production of Theater Rotterdam.

At the same time, they create works for professional dance schools and postgraduate programs of dance such as “Free Bodies” in Barcelona, “EPDC” in Burgos and “Pera Gau” in Kyrenia and give workshops internationally.Dionysios’ source of inspiration is nature, animals and native civilisations and the main purpose for which he creates is to inspire, to sensitize and to raise awareness. To truly see and to truly feel.

DANAE DIMITRIADI
Danae Dimitriadi is a graduate of Athens State School of Dance. As a member of Hellenic Dance Company she danced repertories of Akram Khan and Martha Graham and she was part of Anton Lachky’s creation “No More Fairytales”. In 2014, she performed “Panorama” at the New York City Hall and at the Athens Concert Hall in collaboration with Martha Graham Company.

After her graduation, she worked for ZfinMalta Ensemble during the season 2016-17 where she had the opportunity to collaborate with artists such as Mavin Khoo, Jose Agudo, Ivan Perez and more, while she was given the first role in the performance Bahr, which was created for the presidency of the European Union alongside the Philharmonic Orchestra of Malta.

Furthermore, Danae recently received the support program of Stavros Niarchos Foundation, “Artworks”. Since 2015, she has been collaborating with Dionysios Alamanos.

At the same time, they create works for professional dance schools and postgraduate programs of dance such as “Free Bodies” in Barcelona, “EPDC” in Burgos and “Pera Gau” in Kyrenia and give workshops internationally.

SHAPE SHIFTING
Danae and Dionysios aim, through a combination of various techniques, to challenge the practitioners to gain better control of their bodies and minds. Exposing the body to sets of movement which focus on bringing it back to its past forms, they target a balance between our primal self and its evolution. As they play with various rhythmical patterns, they invite the participants to be more aware of how they use and move around them and how they can experiment with them.

Together, they will also explore the foundations of their work with guides based on intense physical activity, inspired by animals and their choreographic research on indigenous people and their stories. Most importantly, in relation to this practice, Danae and Dionysios desire to seed a thinking mind and motivate it to evolve in a conscious way.
